The first weekend of August 2018, MuslimARC is hosting a series of events to addressing anti-racism, critical anti-Islamophobia, and critical cultural competency to provide leaders with frameworks and skills to understand how systemic racism is at the core of the issues impeding Detroit’s revitalization.
Detroit Anti-Racism Training (DART) aims to bring together thirty racially and religiously diverse leaders of community based organizations for a full day training based on MuslimARC’s professional development curriculum. DART will be held on Saturday, August 4th 2018 at Wayne State University Law School and will be followed by a “Detroit Urban Justice” community forum that is open to the public. On Sunday, there will be a closed door roundtable of 20 Black leaders directly impacted by state violence. Each event will move us towards developing empowering solutions to countering systemic racism and Islamophobia.

Role Descriptions
- Catering Assistant: Catering assistants will assist with set-up and takedown of all meals, snacks, drinks. They may assist the catering staff or other logistics staff.
- Event Assistant: Event assistants primarily help with set-up and clean-up at large conference events and plenary sessions. This may involve light furniture moving. These volunteers may also be asked to assist with welcoming participants to the meeting spaces. They will also serve as Ushers during opening session and lunch. They will be responsible for guiding participants into the auditorium and helping to ensure that the opening session begins on time. During meals, they will seat attendees and ensure that speakers receive food.
- Floater: Floaters are volunteers who are primarily on call. They will be asked to remain in a certain location and be available to help with various tasks as needed. These tasks may include arranging furniture in session rooms, assisting conference staff with special projects, providing information to conference attendees, and other similar tasks.
- Guide: Guides will be responsible for helping conference participants move between conference locations. This may be an indoor or outdoor activity. Help attendees find their way around the location. You will receive maps and a clipboard with an informational sign on it so attendees know who you are. You will be standing for the majority of your shift. Please be ready to assist any attendees who have mobility issues and/or ask if they appear to need help. This may include elderly attendees, wheelchair users or people with crutches, or those who are vision-impaired. You may be asked to help attendees between locations, so you should be prepared to go outside if necessary.
- (Pre/Post Support Only) Logistics Assistant: Volunteer will provide administrative and logistical support for pre and post event. Duties include creating folders, organizing conference materials, loading/unloading materials into vehicles, sending thank you notes, and more.
- Registration Assistant: Registration Assistants facilitate the conference registration process. This involves tasks such as directing traffic to the registration tables, assembling badges, and generally providing assistance to the conference registration staff. They may sign attendees in using a smartphone, laptop, or tablet and card scanner. Registration assistants will distribute conference materials to attendees.
- Session Assistants: Session Attendants assist the speakers or workshop presenters in meeting their needs before, during, and after their presentation(s). This may include making sure water or other beverages are available, rearranging seating as appropriate, distributing handouts, and other tasks as required. Some breakout sessions and other discussion sessions may require additional facilitation, so be prepared to pay attention to the instructions the facilitator is providing so that you can assist session attendees.
- Social Media Assistant: These volunteers must be experienced social media users who are knowledgeable about social media protocol and Twitter/Instagram/Facebook best practices (i.e. the use of hashtags, re-tweeting, @ing/attributing to other accounts, etc.). Assistants must be on site for the duration of the conference. Assistants will not be posting as official representatives of MuslimARC but will coordinate with MuslimARC staff to ensure consistency of message. This will involve providing the highlights of the discussion, and connecting to online communities of interest through creative hashtagging. Advanced research will be required to prepare hyperlinks, handles, and hashtags for use in live-tweeting. Live Tweeters will be asked to provide their own laptops and/or smartphones for onsite work. Instagram volunteers will take pictures of sessions using the relevant hashtags.
